How to Ship Hazardous Materials in a Safe Manner
Shipping chemical substances is a difficult task and a lot of planning goes behind it. A lot of rules and regulations are required to be followed when there is need for shipping of hazardous materials. These regulations define hazardous materials and specify how to go about hazardous material shipping. The shipping of hazardous materials poses a serious danger to one and all, which might come in contact with the shipment. Inappropriate shipping of hazardous materials is a major problem that can result in injury, damage to property, loss of life and major fines. Therefore, it is highly critical that one carefully follows the rules so that any possible unsafe situation is avoided at any cost.
Severe penalties are levied on anyone who violates these regulations. Packages that contain hazardous materials are supposed to be properly labeled beforehand. Hazardous material items that are usually shipped incorrectly are cosmetics, perfumes, nail polish, lipsticks, alcohol, products containing alcohol such as cleaning products and even alcoholic beverages are considered dangerous.
There are shipping labels available to label different hazardous chemicals. These shipping labels are available in sizes of 4"x 4" and come in rolls of 500 pieces, have semi gloss face stock, permanent adhesive and come on a 1" inch core base. There is also availability of custom made labels which come with special blank white region, so that one could write their own specific instruction on them. This region does not come on the stock labels.
Hazmat drums are now are a popular packing item among companies who have regular shipping requirements for hazardous materials. These hazmat containers are manufactured in compliance with federal and state regulations and ensure the safe shipping of dangerous chemical materials. These are specialized drums and made in such a way that they are leak-proof, so as to avoid any unnecessary hassles usually involved with chemical substances. The drums are manufactured and are certified under UN and DOT regulations as well as military specifications.
It becomes imperative on part of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or distributor to ensure that each container of hazardous chemicals is labeled, tagged or marked with information regarding the identification of the hazardous chemicals with appropriate hazard warnings and the name and address of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or other responsible party. Labels and warnings must be legible. If an employer becomes aware of any significant changes regarding the hazards of a chemical, the labels for those chemicals shall be revised with the new information. The manufacturer, importer or distributor is not required to affix new labels to containers to comply if the existing labels already convey the required information.
Shipping hazardous material can be quick and easy as long as the appropriate steps are taken. Knowing how to ship hazardous material the correct way is important. Therefore, it is very critical to use safety carbon steel drums or specialized drums like Hazmat drums in shipping of very deadly chemical materials so as to avoid all kinds of serious accidents.
