Cardboard Boxes and Environmental Issues
Cardboard boxes offer incredible convenience when shipping, packing or storing items. They are important for personal and business use and there are many enterprises whose sole scope of existence depends on their availability to ship and dispatch items as orders come in. Often societies take cardboard boxes for granted and do not realize their importance in life until a box is needed to pack or mail goods. Boxes have also become significant in the services sector – many items such as brochures, convenience packets, almost all paper and food items in a hotel or a restaurant come neatly arranged in large cardboard boxes.
As used boxes pile up, they tend to create a recycling challenge for waste management companies and need certain changes in curbside collection policies to address this issue. Cardboard and paper are the two items which are with the most recycled ratio and a small amount of them ends up in landfills and or comingled general garbage stream. What this does is that it opens doors for newer and better technology for household and industrial waste collection and separation eliminating manual labor and other expensive techniques.
This is important as in this fashion, the industry closes its manufacturing loop and makes full utilization of existing resources. Use of recycled fibers in the production of cardboard is rather common meaning that the same box may be used and reused quite a few times. The concept is similar in the food and beverage industry where chances are that the next time you pick up a can of soda at the gas station, this could be its seventh or eighth use after remanufacturing. To sum up, organizing proper trash collection and maintaining low cost of recycled material keeps all parties satisfied. City management councils would be able to allocate annual budgets and local paper mills would gladly buy from the material recycling facilities keeping them interested to reinvest. It is important that the price of recycled material is kept competitive with the cost of virgin raw materials. This part is tricky as often it is rather tough to compete with growing economies or with foreign companies who get government stimulus to manufacture inexpensive raw materials.
