The Skinny on Sipping the Pounds Away
How many of us really stop to think about how what we drink in a day could effect our weight loss or weight gain? There is lots of talk on watching what we eat while dieting, but not necessarily what we drink. That’s a big dieting mistake. The average American gets a fifth of daily calories from beverages. What you sip on a daily basis can change your metabolism, reduce your total calorie count, and shift your appetite. Which drinks are winners and which are watchers on the path to weight loss?
Soda is one of the biggest criminals when it comes to weight gain. Every time you down a bottle of soda, you’re consuming hundreds of empty calories. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, carbonated soft drinks are the single biggest source of calories in the American diet. You can combat this by switching to diet soda, but the jury is still out on whether that is really helpful or not. There is some research that suggests that diet soda may increase ones sweet tooth, thus defeating the purpose all together. The best solution is to replace carbonated soft drinks with water. Water is a miracle worker, not only for weight loss, but also for your overall health. For weight loss though, drinking water is a definite winner. Drinking two glasses of water before a meal may encourage the stomach to feel full more quickly, so you don’t eat as much. In addition, new research suggests keeping that water bottle full may have a positive effect on your metabolism, speeding it up, or at least keeping it rolling.
Next up for review is fruit juice. I know, you are thinking what can be wrong with fruit juice? Well, a little known secret is that while juice has far more to offer then soda in the way of nutrients, a class of fruit juice can have just as many calories as soda. Vitamins and Antioxidants are important, but you don’t have to drink your weight in them. If you insist on fruit juice look for 100% fruit juice without added sweeteners. Also, if you are just looking for taste, a glass of water with a bit of lemon or orange juice can go a long way. Another choice is vegetable juice. It is just as nutritious, but with about half the calories and vegetable juice high in fiber can help control hunger.
Early research in the early 2000’s suggested that calcium might propel the body to lose weight by burning more weight. While milk may “do a body good”, new research discloses that calcium probably won’t help you lose weight. However, on the flipside, withholding calcium from the body has been shown to increase the production of fat cells. Keep calcium in your diet, but keep it low fat or skim.
Coffee is both a winner and a watcher. Black coffee, along with being free of calories, has been shown to have many benefits including improving mood and concentration, and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and several types of cancer. However, once you add that cream and sugar, throw your diet out the window. Some specialty coffees have more calories in one drink then an entire dinner. If you just can’t do straight black, add some artificial sweetener, maybe some skim milk, and call it a day. Just stay away from that Latte!
Alcohol is another sticky subject. Maybe being intoxicated might keep you from raiding the fridge, but I doubt it will help you sleep off those calories. Wine coolers may sound chilling but they are heavy on calories. A 12-ounce wine cooler can have 190 calories and 22 grams of carbs. Regular wine is not much better with at least 100 calories in a 5-ounce glass. A shot of hard liquor has fewer calories than wine or wine coolers, but once you mix in soda or cream prepare to blossom out … An 8-ounce white Russian made with light cream has 715 calories. As for your favorite beer during that big game, look for about 150 calories per serving. Most cans have two, servings that is. Some low-calorie alternatives include a wine spritzer: mix a dash of wine with some sparkling water, a plain shot of your favorite Vodka, or light beer, which will run you about 100 calories per serving.
Losing weight is never easy, but slimming down your daily beverages might be the secret to getting a thinner hand on the new skinny you.
