Are Your Beverages Sabotaging Your Weight?
Do you ever stop to think about what you drink? What should you consider when choosing beverages? First of all, how much thought do you put into what you drink? And what your children drink? Do you think about it at all? Do you just choose what you've always had, or what you had as a child?
Do you ever consider the number of calories your beverages contain or what percentage of your daily calorie intake that is? What nutrients do they provide? Do they provide any? How is what you drink beneficial to your body?
The purpose of drinking fluids is to maintain hydration in the body. The balance between water and electrolytes in our bodies has a direct effect on the function of our systems. Some beverages, those with caffeine and alcohol, actually dehydrate the body.
Beverages also do very little for us in terms of satiation–they don't fill us up or satisfy us longterm. For this reason, it is very important to consider the number of calories they provide. For example, a 20-ounce cola has around 240 calories, 65 grams of sugar (the equivalent of about 16 teaspoons of sugar!), and 0 nutrients. Don't waste your calories on something that will do nothing but leave you hungry again in another hour.
One cup of skim milk 1-2 times per day or maybe a half-cup of real fruit juice 1-2 times per day is about all the calories you need from beverages. If you're getting more than that from what you are drinking you may need to consider a new plan.
So what should you be drinking most of the time? Of course, you know I'm going to say water. Water is vital for many functions in the human body. Approximately two-thirds of our body is comprised of water. It transports nutrients and oxygen, regulates body temperature, detoxifies, improves metabolism, just to name a few benefits. Every cell in our body requires water. For example, the brain is made up of 90% water, so if you're not getting enough water the brain cannot function well, resulting in possible headaches or migraines. Water also helps with weight control because it has no calories, it can suppress your appetite, fill you up, and give you more energy so you feel like exercising.
You can try water with lemon or flavored waters or unsweetened, decaffeinated teas to provide more variety. While diet soft drinks are calorie-free keep in mind that most contain caffeine, which can dehydrate you and can act as an appetite stimulant.
If you're worried that what you're drinking may be compromising your health and preventing you from getting to the weight you'd like, it's time to come up with a new plan, one that will slash the calories and make you feel better. I have worked with many clients who have lost weight just by changing what they drink! It can make that much of a difference!
